EDGAR W. BROWN, M. D., who for twenty years was a practicing physician, highly esteemed by a large patronage in Orange, has in recent years devoted himself to business and affairs, with results that are noteworthy in the history of his home city. At the present time he is serving as mayor of Orange, being one of the local leaders in the Democratic party.
In agricultural lines he has attained at least one point of fame1 he is the pioneer tobacco planter of Orange county, and has raised some of the finest tobacco produced in the state. Rice farming is one of his chief pursuits, and he owns about 2,000 acres of rice farms.
Dr. Brown was born in Ringgold, Georgia, November 22, 1859. His father, Samuel M. Brown, likewise a physician. was a native of South Carolina, served as surgeon in Orr's brigade in the Confederate army, came to Texas in 1867 and practiced at Orange up to the time of his death, in 1887. Thus for nearly thirty-five years there was a practicing physician from this family at Orange. Georgia A. Malone (the maiden name of the doctor’s mother) is still living in Orange, being a Mississippian by birth.
The Orange public schools furnished the groundwork of his education, and he then took up the study of medicine in the University of New Orleans, graduating in the class of 1882. He later took post-graduate work in New Orleans. He was regularly engaged in a general practice at Orange up to 1901. and then retired almost altogether from professional work. He had in the meantime become interested in the lumber industry, and is now connected with some of the important lumber interests of Southeast Texas. He is vice president of the Lutcher-Moore Lumber Company, is director of the Lutcher-Moore Cypress Company of Louisiana. and is general manager and part owner of the Dibert, Stark & Brown Cypress Company of Donner. Louisiana. Also a director in the First National Bank of Orange. Mr. Brown affiliates with Orange Lodge, No. 284, B.P.O.E.
In 1888 he married Miss Carrie L. Lutcher, daughter of H. K. Lutcher, of Orange. They are parents of three children1 Fannie L., wife of R. A. Moore, of Orange; Edgar W., Jr., and Lutcher.
